2018 NFL Draft Profile: Trenton Thompson

Trenton Thompson, Defensive Tackle, Georgia

6’4, 309 Lbs, Junior,

Trenton Thompson was destined for greatness being labeled a 5 star defensive tackle, and the top recruit in the class of 2015 by 247Sports. Thompson wrecked offensive lines in high school, and though only notching 4 sacks his senior year, managing 38 tackles for a loss. Talk about living in the back field! In his true freshman season, In his true freshman season, Thompson say the field early for the Bulldogs but managed to get only 25 total tackles, 2 pass deflections, and .5 sacks. After getting his feet wet, Thompson came back his sophomore year and more than doubled his total tackles (56), and collected 9.5 tackles for loss with 5 sacks. In their bowl game against TCU, Thompson wrecked havoc across the playing field, rallying to sack the quarterback 3 times pushing Georgia ahead of the Horned Frogs 31-23.

Trenton shows his 5 star skill set right off the ball, pouncing and driving through blockers off the snap. He is a powerful tackler that drives players into the dirt, and can take over a single series to shut down a drive. The Bulldogs had Thompson line up all over the defensive line, and was able to get to the quarterback and ruin plays from every position he played. He can tend to be sloppy at times in terms of his coordination and movement. Thompson’s motor can be questioned at times on the field, but always finds himself going 100% when it matters the most. Off the field concerns are a big red flag, as he was reportedly rushed to hospital for oxycontin use while rehabbing a shoulder injury and withdrew from a semester of football. Recently re-enrolled in summer classes, the Bulldog looks to make his past stay in the past, and brighten his future. If Thompson can live up to his hype, expect his name to be called extremely early in next years draft.

Possible Landing Spots: Top 10 Pick

Minnesota Vikings - Minnesota has one of the best defenses in the NFL currently, but Sharrif Floyds contract will be expiring and the team could look else where. Thompson plays a similar role to Floyd, and would be a nice fresh start at the defensive tackle spot.

Philadelphia Eagles - Derek Barnett wasn't Philly fans favorite choice but was it a bad pick? Not at all. Putting Thompson with this defensive line unit could spell big trouble for not just the division but for the NFL.

New Orleans Saints - The Saints defense is just a few young pieces away from being a laughing stock of an NFL defense. Trenton Thompson would be the perfect person to replace Nick Fairley next season, and could form an amazing duo with Rankins.
