Way Too Early Fantasy Football Rankings

Here we are on the first day of June, which means 62 days left until the NFL pre-season starts, and another 85 until CFB begins. June is the sunrise to the football season, and that means it's time to wake up and do some mock drafts! As suggested in the title, I understand the NFL is a daily league, and in those 62 days we will see a ton of shake ups. Either way I went ahead and still formed together my rankings by position for this upcoming fantasy year. Below I will be breaking down the top 10 at every position, and the rest can be viewed to the side.

QB: Everyone has heard about the offseason the Patriots had, and that leads me with no reason to doubt Tom as my top QB. As bad as the Packers were last year Aaron Rodgers was still putting up numbers, and as long as Big Ben stays up and on the field I see him doing the same. I had a tough time not including Carr in my top tier of QBs for this season, but the AFC West has probably the best defenses in the NFL which makes me believe Carr still has something to prove. I predict Matt Ryan to slump with the loss of Shanahan but Newton to do the opposite with a much more fitting offense built around him. Much like Big Ben, I would think as long as you keep him healthy and on the field it will be hard to keep Cam from scoring points. Slots 7, 8, and 9 honestly are close enough to be a toss up. With all the drama forming around the Seahawks, don't be surprised to see him fall in my rankings. Even though the Seahawks have done a nice job giving him more weapons, but that doesn't change his o-line or leadership in the locker room. I love what Dak did last season, finishing in the top 8 for QBs as a rookie, but I am afraid Dallas' defense is going to cause him trouble. Drew Brees has lost weapons as he gets older, and I am not a Willie Snead believer. With Ingram, Kamara, and Peterson in that backfield I see them running the ball a lot more than they have in recent seasons. Rounding off the top 10 is Stafford, where he seems to be every season, just on the edge of greatness. Marcus Mariota had a great season, and the Titans had an even better off season, but in comparing someone with 30,000 yards to someone with 6,000, i'm taking the 30K.

RB: David Johnson is a beast of a man and he has to carry the Cardinals more and more every season, and in a PPR league Johnson is going to dominate your league. Same could be said for Le’Veon Bell, but with Bryant back, and the addition to Smith Schuster, Bell just has to fight for those touches a lot more than Johnson would. Ezekiel Elliott had an amazing season and is one of my favorite backs in the league currently, that being said I don't see him getting anything near the catches my top two will. Along with that Dak will become a stronger force in the passing game, and some of those 150 rushing yard games will probably turn into more 400 yard performances from Dak. Melvin Gordon rounds up my top tier as my 4th overall back. The Chargers used him well last year, and with this years draft of Dan Feeney and Forrest Lamp I could only see him getting better holes in the upcoming season. Todd Gurley is the biggest question mark I have in my list, as he easily could be in my top tier, and even ahead of Gordon. The Rams lack an offensive identity, and so far have shown no reason for defenses to not just stack the box to stop Gurley. They did add Whitworth to patch the offensive line, and I would expect Jared Goff and Tavon Austin to do SOMETHING this year, that would help a ton.

DeMarco Murray is a workhorse, but I could see him getting more and more red zone touches taken from him and given to Henry. I would look at drafting Henry to cuff with Murray in cause of injury because Derrick Henry has done plenty with the touches he has gotten so far. Jordan Howard had almost as good of a season as Ezekiel Elliott did last year, in fact he averaged more per rush than Elliott did last season. With all the talent on the Bears roster offensively, I’d expect a heavy dose of Howard. My first rookie, and only rookie I will be talking about in my Top 10s is Leonard Fournette. I am a huge believer that Blake Bortle’s isn't an NFL QB and Fournette is going to get a lot of touches his first year. With all the weapons the Jags have, it will be hard to contain a player like Fournette from getting into the endzone. LeSean McCoy will also have a heavy load to carry on the offensive side of the ball as I don't see much potential for the Bills. LeSean is my 9th overall but definitely has red flags surrounding him at quarterback and wide receiver. Jay Ajayi was supposed to take the reigns of the dolphins back field last season but had a few hiccups early on, and still finished with over 1,200 rushing yards and 3 games of 200 yards last year. Ajayi could be a potential steal and finish this season as a top 5 running back but only time will tell.

WR: Last year I had Antonio Brown ahead of Julio Jones, so with Kyle Shanahan leaving town, Brown remains atop the throne of wide outs for the 2017 season. Julio Jones remains my second wide receiver this year, and Odell remains my 3rd.  A.J. Green was debatably the best wide receiver in the NFL last year before losing the season to injury, and with Ross and Mixon added to this offense, I see him getting even more open looks. Mike Evans also is going to benefit from a great offseason as the Bucs added Desean Jackson and O.J Howard to help open the field for Evans. Howard will be a red zone issue for Mike Evans owners but expect a huge season for the 6’5 freak. T.Y Hilton finished as the top receiver in yards last year, even with a struggling offense. Though he finished with over 1,400 he had 4 games last year with 3 or less catches and stayed out of the endzone 10 of the 16 games last year. I wanted the Bengals to draft Michael Thomas so badly last year, when I watch him all I see is a clone of a healthy Dez Bryant. With Cooks out the way, Thomas is looking to become Brees number one option, and that's always good for fantasy owners. DeAndre Hopkins is another question mark this year, with Watson at QB, could he return back to his elite wide out self? I believe to a degree, with Fuller and Miller becoming for involved with the offense, Hopkins has a good chance at being elite once again. I am a big fan of Watson, and with multiple threats instead of just Hopkins, it gives him the chance to do more himself. Dez Bryant finds himself some how in my top 10 once again, even though I have low faith in him succeeding this season but his ceiling is too high for me to leave out. His red zone ability is 2nd to none, but he cannot stay healthy, and now they look to pass second in the redzone. Another player with a lot of red flags surrounding him.

TE: This year is a very weird season for me, in the sense of Rob Gronkowski isn’t my number one tight end. He actually isn't even in my top 3 shockingly, but after what Travis Kelce did last year, I can’t keep him at number one. Kelce finished with over 80 catches last season and really flowed well with the new offense the Chiefs seemed to run. Greg Olsen is expected to see a drop off from last season, but not enough for me to put him above Delanie Walker, who I expect to see a smaller role as well. Olsen has had 70 catches in the last 4 years and over 1,000 yards in the last three. Walker had 94 catches and 6 touchdowns in 2015 and had 65 catches with 800 yards in 9 games last year. Gronk finds himself as my 4th tight end, after he went down again with more injuries. Rob Gronkowski is one or two more injuries from beginning retired and that is a huge red flag. My 5th and 6th tight end, Jordan Reed and Tyler Eifert, are in the same spotlight. Reed is probably my number 2 tight end if he wasn’t one more concussion away from retiring as well, and Eifert is probably my 3rd tight end if he could play 16 games. With how the Bengals have drafted, I wouldn't be surprised if they shy away from Eifert early in the season. Jimmy Graham is without a doubt the best receiver on the Seahawks, but the offense is very hard to predict. My 8th tight end could very well be vultured into a top 15 TE, and that is Hunter Henry. OTA reports say he could be used more in the 1st and 2nd downs, and benched on third downs for Gates, but as Gates sidekick last year he flourished so giving him more targets only seems beneficial to me. One of the more quiet but big moves was Martellus Bennett heading to the land of cheese to catch passes from the great Aaron Rodgers. Jared Cook really was used nicely in the tight end role, and Martellus Bennett is head and shoulder over Jared Cook. Look for Bennett to be a good sleeper tight end this year. Zach Ertz is very unpredictable but always seems to keep his head above water when it comes to fantasy football. Behind Carson Wentz’s rise, I give Ertz a higher potential as compared to someone like Coby Fleener or Julius Thomas.

D/ST: The Seahawks may be questionable on offense this year, but their defense will remain a top as the NFC West only has 1 and a half NFL caliber quarterbacks to face. Jared Goff, Brian Hoyer, and Carson Palmer will be feeding the ball to the Seahawks defense most of this season. The Texans lost A.J Bouye but gained back their 3x DPOY in J.J Watt. Also facing a suspect Blake Bortles and Andrew Luck makes the season a lot easier. The Patriots added to their Super Bowl defense, and also don't really have to face any offenses within the division. The Jaguars poured a lot of cap space in building an elite defense, and I think they have a serious shot at being the best this year. Due to the fact I haven't seen them work together as a unit yet, I am putting them at the 4th spot. The Vikings defense showed flashes of being something scary, and with Anthony Barr in a contract year, I could see him taking that next step to being a household name a top the elite list of defenders. The Raiders spent a pretty penny on their defense a year ago as well, but this year they added 3 day 1 play makers with Gareon Conley, Obi Melifonwu and even Eddie Vanderdoes in the 3rd round. It feels weird saying the Broncos are my 7th ranked defense considering on what I have seen them do, but the AFC West is highly loaded and I would expect to see a lot of point within that division. The Bengals missed out on Reuben Foster, and i will never forgive them for that. Carl Lawson was a nice addition to the edge, and maybe even inside linebacker according to reports coming out of practice. With that they still have Geno Atkins, Vontaze Burfict and Dre Kirkpatrick to rely on while we look for prospects like William Jackson III Andrew Billings, and Shawn Williams to fill in bigger roles. The Chiefs defense is definitely caught in the middle of reloading, but luckily that “ST” stands for special teams too, which I believe the Chiefs and Tyreek Hill will shred. Their defense might not be the 10th best but mix in the speed of Tyreek Hill and that gives them enough to make them my 10th best defense this season.

K: Justin Tucker can kick a 65 yard field goal in game, enough said to be my number 1 kicker for the 2017 season. Stephen Gostkowski could have a pretty busy season at the PAT line, with those chip shots I see a lot of fantasy potential in Gostkowski, making him my 2nd kicker on the board. Going along with the assumption of a busy year at the PAT line, I selected Chris Boswell as my 3rd ranked kicker behind that high power Steelers offense. Matt Bryant was one of the best kickers last year kicking 56 extra points and 34 field goals, as with every other position earlier, the loss of Shanahan will most likely bring those numbers down. Dan Bailey could go down as the most accurate kicker in NFL history and is 39-40 from 20-29 yards out for his career. Growing up in Dallas, I’d be a fool to keep Bailey out of my top 5. There really isn't much distance between the kickers in the 6-10 range. If the Colts, and Packers are hitting on offense maybe there would be more to talk about, but until then just get a kicker.
